Melbourne currently sits in 16th position on the AFL ladder. Here are some of the key performance indicators that reflect the Demons’ struggles this season:

Getting their hands on the ball

Melbourne have had a league-worst 4495 disposals so far in 2012 - that’s 222 less than 17th placed Port Adelaide and 921 less than Richmond, which has had the most. Freo is in 10th with 5067.

Using it

While the Demons struggle to get the ball, when they do, they are also the worst in the league at using it. Their disposal efficiency is at 69.6 per cent. Hawthorn leads on 75.5, while Fremantle is running at 72.3.

Where will the goals come from?

After Mitch Clark, who has kicked 29 goals this year, the next best Melbourne goal kickers are Jeremy Howe and Nathan Jones with 12. With Clark out for the season, Melbourne must find more avenues to goal. One of those could be former skipper Brad Green, who is back in the side this week. He’s a noted goal kicker but he has struggled this season. Green did kick five majors in Melbourne’s big win over Freo in 2011.

Score sources

Melbourne are 15th in the league in scoring from stoppages (388 points), and 3rd in conceding the most points from stoppages (582).

The Demons are the third worst in conceding from turnovers (880 points), and are 16th in scoring from turnovers (541).

What the Demons do well

Melbourne is 2nd in the AFL for contested marks (204). Jeremy Howe leads the league (tied with four others) in this category with 14. Mitch Clark has hauled in 11 but will not play again in 2012.

Other stats
- The Demons lead the league for mark-play-on percentage with 42.6.
- Freo is 11th (32.3).
