Moller samples the dream
Craig Moller found out he’d be making his AFL debut just a couple of hours before bounce down in the round 23 game against St Kilda.
The 19-year-old was a late inclusion to the team after Garrick Ibbotson had failed a fitness test.
He debuted along with teammates Alex Forster and Josh Simpson in the loss to the Saints at Etihad Stadium.
Moller was told on Thursday morning before training that he’d be elevated from the rookie list.
“I didn’t find out until after training that I would be flying to Melbourne as an emergency,” he said.
Heading to Etihad on Saturday morning Moller didn’t know he was playing but he prepared as if he was in the final 22.
“I was already in the mindset that I was going to play, that's what I had to do,” he said.
“I didn't get told until before the game by Ross Lyon and Chris Bond that I was in.”
Starting as the sub, Moller thought he would have to wait to enter the game.
But with Clancee Pearce going down in the first quarter with an Achilles injury, Moller got his chance earlier than he expected.
“I prepared to sit on the bench for a little bit but I got on the ground within about five minutes,” he said.
“Going from not playing, to the sub, to getting on straight away I didn't have any time to think about nerves or what was going on.
“I think I went on and tried to tackle Lenny Hayes and he kicked a goal so that was an interesting introduction to AFL.”
Rotating between a ruck role and the forward line, Moller said it was a tough day for not only him, but the whole team.
“The result wasn't in our favour and there wasn't much ball coming down, but it was just good to get a run,” he said.
“It was an opportunity to see what we are building towards and why we keep training so hard during pre-season and during the week and what it all goes towards.
“I wanted to give good effort and I thought I did that.”
