WAFL Watch: Round 9 - Defenders and forwards
Find out how Freo's players fared playing for Peel on the weekend
Played key forward opposed to Zachary Strom and Nicholas Borovac. He moved well, found space through some good leading patterns and showed a good hit-up through the corridor in the first and he released hard in the second to take a good mark. He finished with two goals and continues to show strong bodywork and positioning consistently.
Matt Taberner – 17 disposals (15 kicks, 2 handballs), 8 marks
Matt played forward opposed to Dylan Ross, where he worked hard and found space but didn’t make the most of his goal scoring opportunities, kicking three behinds. He ran high sprint distance and covered a lot of kilometres, so he’s moving really well.
Colin Sylvia – 15 disposals (13 kicks, 2 handballs), 9 marks, 3 goals
Colin played forward with real energy and enthusiasm. There were passages of play where he showed good burst as an outlet and looked dangerous. He kicked three goals – one from a snap and two from set-shots inside 50. Colin took several strong marks and dropped a couple of others that he will take in time. Overall he tackled really well with six strong tackles that really stuck.
Jack Hannath - 15 disposals (9 kicks, 6 handballs), 5 marks, 17 hitouts
A much improved performance from Jack. Primarily positioned as a key forward, rotating regularly through the ruck each quarter. He showed greater effort in all areas of his game, particularly with his work rate around stoppages and general play involvement in ground-ball contests.
Brady Grey – 14 disposals (8 kicks, 6 handballs), 5 marks, 2 goals
Brady played on Ashton Hams for the game Initially Brady played forward and then followed Hams, who went into attack, and became a defender. As a forward he was able to get himself into scoring positions, kicking 2.3, which could quite easily have been five straight. He showed some great pressure with his intent to chase and his physicality around the contest. He really stuck to his task. Brady’s played in a variety of roles throughout the season and he’s continuing to grow and develop as the week’s progress.
Alex Pearce - 13 disposals (9 kicks, 4 handballs), 7 marks
Alex was opposed to Ben Saunders deep in defence, where he was isolated for most of the game, He had 2.4 kicked on him but he battled all day and competed hard in the on-on-one contest, where he outmuscled an experienced opponent on a number of occasions. Alex is in his second game for the year at league level and is continuing to improve as the week’s progress.
Kepler Bradley - 20 disposals (14 kicks, 6 handballs), 5 marks
Kepler played across half-back for most of the day opposed to a mixture of smalls and talls. He’s settled the team down in regards to his use, showing composure coming out of defence. He’s shown some really good leadership to his younger teammates around him.
Michael Wood (Reserves) – 14 disposals (13 kicks, 1 handballs), 8 marks, 2 goals
Michael played as a deep forward and for small periods as an inside mid. He pushed through the game after illness during the week and took some good contested marks, kicking 2.1.
Tom Vandeleur (Reserves) - 12 disposals (8 kicks, 4 handballs), 3 marks
Tom played as a half-back on the South Fremantle third tall forward. Tom worked hard in some one-on-one contests but at times he still needs to play closer-checking as a defender and recognise opportunities to run and create from defence.
