There was a surprise ending to Fremantle’s 30-point win against Richmond at the Swinburne Centre on Saturday, with the players singing a bonus verse in the team song.
The verse that starts with ‘we’re gonna roll ‘em and we’ll rock ‘em’ is often forgotten about except when listing to the full song on game day.
The AFLW team decided it was time to honour the verse after the win, with former captain Kara Antonio claiming the idea but crediting new captain Hayley Miller for getting it across the line.
“I’ve been fighting for it for the last five years and ever since Miller’s been captain she’s got it through. I don’t know what happened there!” Antonio said.
“I love it, I love the second verse and we’ve started with it and we’re gonna roll with it I think.
“It’s a nice little addition and I love it.”

Antonio was lucky to play and sing the song in front of her Victorian family and friends at the game, and said the privilege wasn’t lost on her.
“You can always hear my Mum in the crowd, so it was nice to be able to play a few games in front of them,” Antonio said.
“Obviously we’re on the road for a few more games so I’m one of the lucky ones with Airlie (Runnalls) to actually have family here, everyone’s family is back in WA.
“I definitely don’t take that for granted. I was lucky enough to kick a couple goals and point out to my family in the crowd.”
Freo’s win sets up a blockbuster clash against Collingwood next Sunday at Victoria Park, with both teams unbeaten after three rounds.
“They’re in some great form and I’m really excited to test ourselves against one of the really good teams over the last couple of seasons,” Antonio said.
“We’ll do our homework during the week, we’ll review this game, obviously there’s a lot to learn, especially from the first half.
“We’ll get to work throughout the week and tackle Collingwood to see how we can beat them.”
Antonio paid tribute to the Fremantle fans back in WA and is hopeful of playing in front of the Purple Army again soon amid uncertainty around WA’s border.
“I just want to thank them for all their support, I know they’ll be tuning in and watching and celebrating from the couch and cheering us on,” Antonio said.
“Hopefully, fingers crossed, in the next few weeks we’ll be back home playing in front of them. Keep strong, we’re playing not just for the people over here but everyone back home. Thank you for all your support.”
