Troy Nababan is set to enter his sixth season as Fremantle’s ‘Rocker on the Roof’, performing to the Purple Army at every home game.

Speaking to 6PR’s Mark Foreman, Nababan said a call from his agent changed it all when he was asked about a ‘weird’ gig, which led him to become Fremantle’s resident guitar player.

“Here we are six years later – no audition, (and) there’s a lot of great guitar players around that could absolutely do this gig, so I think I was just (in) the right place (at) the right time,” Nababan said.

Nababan unpacked his usual game day experience and said his time on the roof is short but impactful.

“It’s pretty much exactly as you’d expect – it’s pretty exhilarating,” Nababan said.

“The adrenaline is huge. It’s over before you know it, but the amount of energy you have feels incredible.

“The most fun thing is five to 10 minutes before (the game), (I get) to look over the stadium, watch people filter in and see how many people there are.

“I’m really lucky I’m the guy that gets to do it.”

Nababan touched on one of his most memorable nights in the role, as he performed at Fremantle’s thrilling Elimination Final with the Western Bulldogs in 2022.

“The energy of the stadium was (undeniable) – I’ve never felt it like that before, it was amazing,” Nababan said.

“I’m excited for that possibility (this year) – it’s more than just a gig.”

Filled with love for his role, Nababan touched on how grateful he is for the opportunity and said he isn’t thinking about hanging the guitar up any time soon.

“I'll do this as long as they'll have me do it,” Nababan said.

“I’ve played on the roof in pretty inclement weather. I will go up and do the gig (in) rain, hail, shine, (or) thunderstorms.

“It is, literally, a once in a lifetime gig. I'm very fortunate and very grateful to Fremantle.

“It's still one of the most exciting things I get to do and probably will ever get to do.”
