Versatile forward / ruck Rory Lobb has explained how his shorter goal-kicking routine is working for him after being one of Fremantle’s best in a two-point win against Sydney at Optus Stadium on Saturday.
Lobb had a day out with four straight goals, his most in a game for Fremantle and equal to his career-best.
In an interview on 6PR, the 28-year-old spoke about his goalkicking struggles in 2020 and how he’s worked through the issue with his run-up.
“It was obviously good to kick straight. I’ve been missing a few this year transitioning across with my (new) set shot (routine),” Lobb told 6PR.
“It’s just been a trial and error. Mentally, last year, I was a bit frustrated with the stutter (as) it came back into my game…I had once got rid of it before.
“I’ve basically just shortened up my run up as much as I could and taken the thoughts out of it as much as I can.
“I just felt like I was really getting through the ball even through I’m only going off probably six steps in the end. It felt really good.”
Lobb also addressed his quick recovery from a pre-season knee injury sustained against West Coast in a Marsh Community Series game.
It was initially forecast as a 12-week injury but Lobb missed just four games.
“I like to think I’m a quick healer. The ‘doc’ said I would probably be out for about 12 weeks and straight away I said to him it would be half that,” Lobb said.
“After the first couple of weeks he said I was looking at about eight weeks and I think it ended up being about five or six.
“I got pretty lucky I was able to recover really well and stuck to my rehab program.
“I only ended up missing four games, which is good.”
