Senior coach Justin Longmuir has confirmed defender Luke Ryan will make his return against Sydney at Optus Stadium on Saturday night.

Speaking in a media conference on Thursday, Longmuir said Ryan was ready to go.

"Luke will come into the side, he got through training really well yesterday," Longmuir said.

"We'll welcome him back which should shore up our backline even more and we're looking forward to getting one of our leaders back into the team."

The All Australian defender has missed the past three weeks with a calf injury as Fremantle have gone on to lose three consecutive games.

Ryan was instrumental when Fremantle defeated Adelaide on the road in round five, racking up 24 disposals, 12 intercepts and 10 marks, including three contested marks.

In a radio appearance on 6PR on Thursday morning, Ryan said he was fit and firing.

“The calf is good, I got through training yesterday which is good, now I just hope JL (Justin Longmuir) picks me," Ryan told 6PR.

Ryan said he expects either Griffin Logue or Brennan Cox to play on Sydney star Lance Franklin.

“I think either Griff (Griffin Logue) or Coxy (Brennan Cox) will get him," Ryan said.

"Both of them want to play on him which is good, so yeah I guess I will be sitting in the hole in front of him trying to help out my boys.”
