An uninterrupted pre-season to date has second-year midfielder/forward Michael Frederick feeling fit and ready for the 2021 season, however the 20-year-old is also looking to improve other aspects of his game.

Frederick played 10 games in his debut season in 2020, mostly as a forward, but he hopes his improved fitness and strength will lead to more time on the wing.

“I played a fair bit (forward) before getting drafted. I used to be a lot smaller so I was a small forward, so I still have those forward traits there. Now that I’ve grown and gotten a bit fitter, I think I can bring my abilities to the wing now,” Frederick said.

“I think I’m a lot fitter than I was last year. Talking to the strength and conditioning coaches yesterday, I’ve put on a couple kilos in the off-season so they’re pretty happy with that.

“I’m trying to stay on the track on a consistent basis. Last year in pre-season I missed a few sessions, whereas this year I haven’t missed any at all so the body is really good.”

While pleased with his pre-season, Frederick believes his biggest opportunity to grow will come with experience.

“Just taking your time with the footy…I think there were a fair few times where I had time with the footy but I just rushed myself,” Frederick said.

“Just knowing that I have time and space and composing myself before giving the ball away. It’s having a bit more composure with the footy in hand.”

Frederick was at Willetton Primary School with teammate Caleb Serong on Thursday as the pair promoted the club’s partnership with Fair Game Australia, who aim to collect used sporting equipment and redistribute it to those who need it most around the state.

“Fair Game is a very good organisation. When I was younger, I struggled to get a few things for footy … I was lucky I had very good family friends back home to help provide for that,” Frederick said.

“I think it’s a great thing to donate all of this equipment to young kids and get them out on the park and playing sport.

“It makes a big difference. I never thought I would get into the position I’m in now so I’m always grateful for that, knowing that the opportunity doesn’t come too often.”
