Fremantle Senior Coach Justin Longmuir has said there is a selection squeeze ahead of Thursday afternoon’s Gather Round match committee meeting.

Speaking at his Thursday morning media conference, Longmuir said the selection squeeze was a good problem to have, with several key players returning from injury.

“That’s what we want to create as a football club, right? Guys in good form that miss out,” Longmuir said.

“We want a selection squeeze, competition for spots, and all that type of stuff.”

With Hayden Young, Nat Fyfe, Sean Darcy and Sam Switkowski all listed as tests to play this weekend following their progress in Thursday’s main training session, big selection calls loom.

“We’ll want him (Darcy) to do some work today and then we’ll have a chat after training,” Longmuir said.

“If he (Young) isn’t playing, he’ll be playing for Peel again, so we’ll work through that later.

“He (Fyfe) has got to be fully fit, injury-free and really confident in his body and in his game. We’ll make that call later.

“I see Switta (Switkowski) as one of the best small forwards in the competition. He plays a massive role in our team and is one of our leaders, so he’ll come back in if he’s declared fit and gets through training.

“We’ll just make sure we manage all those players the right way.”

Longmuir said a complete performance, that is strong in the contest would be required for Sunday’s meeting with the Tigers, with the Senior Coach making it clear the team would not underestimate what Richmond can bring.

“They’ve been in a lot of games, and sometimes the scoreboard isn’t a reflection of how competitive they’ve been,” Longmuir said.

“I think they set the ground up really well. Their contest work, off the back of Toby Nankervis and some of their mature mids is really solid, and some of their young talent looks really impressive.

“They haven’t taken long to adapt to AFL level.

“They beat Carlton, played a really good first half against St Kilda and never gave up last week against Brisbane. We’re going to have to be at our best.”

Fremantle’s extended squad will be named at 4.20pm WST this afternoon, with the final team of 23 to be announced at 3pm WST on Friday.
