When Fremantle pitted Caleb Serong, Andrew Brayshaw and Adam Cerra against some more experienced midfielders in a recent intraclub game, Serong said the young midfield trio were excited to have the chance to gel.
In last Friday’s clash, Serong (20), Brayshaw (21) and Cerra (21) teamed up with ruck Lloyd Meek (22) to form an engine room that prevailed in a win against their more experienced teammates.
Serong hoped the midfield lineup would be a sign of what is to come for Fremantle.
“We (Serong, Brayshaw and Cerra) haven’t really had a chance to play with each other too much as just us three in the midfield,” Serong said.
“That’s pretty exciting. We’ve been looking forward to that opportunity when it came. On the weekend it was really cool to play with them as well as Lloyd Meek.
“He played really well in the ruck. We are all 21 and under so, hopefully, it’s exciting times for Freo in the next few years.”
After winning the NAB AFL Rising Star in a brilliant debut season in 2020, Serong said he was ready for extra attention from his opponents.
“You’ve got to prepare for that,” Serong said.
“For me, I’m focusing on what I can do and what I can control. That’s my preparation and how I go about training and prepare for games.
“At the moment I am giving myself the best opportunity to perform. It’s just about continuing to do that heading into round one and hopefully the rest of the season.”
Serong and teammate Michael Frederick spent the afternoon at Willetton Primary School to help promote the club’s partnership with Fair Game Australia, which aims to collect used sporting equipment and redistribute it to those who need it most around the state.
“It’s a great organisation” Serong said.
“I know how important it was for me to have team sport and grow up in a community where I was lucky enough to have enough equipment to play.”
Fremantle’s Fans and Community department are partnering with Fair Game to hold a football boots and used sports equipment drive this Saturday, 27 February at Fremantle’s round five AFLW fixture against the Brisbane Lions.
Fair Game’s mission is to create an equitable, healthier and sustainable Australia by delivering unique health and fitness programs and recycled sports equipment to remote and under-serviced communities.
Three blue coloured bins will be positioned at the main gates of Fremantle Oval from 12.30pm-2.20pm, where fans will be encouraged to donate their used or unwanted sporting gear such as football boots, footballs, soccer balls, tennis racquets etc. by placing them into the designated blue bins on arrival.
