Freo's three draft selections: Sarah Verrier, Tiah Haynes and Mikayla Morrison

The 2020 NAB AFL Women’s Draft came to a close on Tuesday evening, with three new additions to Fremantle’s playing list.

Freo went into the draft with picks 14, 30 and 46 (equating to picks two, four and six in the WA draft) and emerged with three exciting draftees.

Versatile midfielder/defender Sarah Verrier, explosive forward Mikayla Morrison and resilient midfielder Tiah Haynes join a Fremantle squad that went undefeated in 2020.

AFLW manager Darryn Fry said Freo’s draft haul was a major success.

“We couldn’t be any more pleased with the outcome of the draft,’ Fry said.

“We think the three picks fit our list balance really well.”

Fry said Fremantle’s first pick in Verrier will bring plenty of skill to the AFLW competition.

“We can’t wait to add Sarah’s versatility and ability to play across multiple lines,” Fry said.

“She has had a challenging 2020 with injury, but we know what she brings to the table and that she will work incredibly hard.

“Sarah has been a really solid performer at state under-age level for a really long time and we are really pleased to acquire her with our first pick.”

Fry said Morrison impressed in a big way throughout the 2020 WAFLW season and will add further goal nous to an already dangerous Fremantle forward line.

“Mikayla has just got genuine X factor, and if you look up her highlights package you can see why we rate her so highly,” Fry said.

“She performed extremely well in the agility and 20 metre sprints in the recent state combine, she is explosive and has really good goal sense.

“Mikayla was also the only player in the WAFLW to kick a goal in every game this year.”

Fry said the return of Haynes, who was on Fremantle’s list for the 2017 and 2018 seasons, was an inspiring story.

“Finally, Tiah is just a great story. She was on Fremantle’s list for the first two seasons but had a wretched run with injuries.” Fry said.

“She is an outstanding person and has worked extremely hard over the last 12 months to get herself back to playing footy.

“Tiah played a full season of WAFLW and was arguably the best player for Subiaco in the grand final last month, as well as the best player in the All-Star game a week later.

“We know how popular she has been and will continue to be with our playing group.”
