Over 500 school teachers were recognised for their contribution to the AFL School Ambassador (AFLSA) programme at a special function held in the Bill Walker Room at Subiaco Oval prior to last Sunday’s NAB Cup Derby. The AFLSA programme is strongly supported by the Fremantle Football Club as part of the Community Development Programme, in partnership with Alinta, and works closely with the WA Football Commission to ensure that this important initiative is supported appropriately.Launched in 2004, the role of the AFLSA is to promote and develop the game of Australian Rules football in the school environment. The Ambassador is provided with professional development, resources and support in order to ensure that the game is given every opportunity to maximise its growth within each individual school.Last Sunday’s function outlined the season ahead for the Ambassadors, as well as rewarding and recognising their work to date. Guest speakers included former Fremantle Captain Peter Bell, who spoke of his school experiences, as well as his favourite teachers and the influence they have had on has lives.Ralf Bates from Alinta also gave a brief talk, and announced that Alinta would be providing an all-expenses paid trip for two to the 2007 AFL Grand Final for this year’s AFL School Ambassador of the Year. The Fremantle Football Club’s Community Development Manager David Crute says the function was a huge success.“The AFL School Ambassadors have sole responsibility for driving the participation of football programs within their school, and it was great to be able to recognise their efforts,” Crute said.Crute also paid tribute to Alinta, who have been tremendous supporters of the Community Development and AFLSA programmes.“Some of the rewards Alinta has offered include tickets for Fremantle home games, some Ambassadors have been given the opportunity to watch a game from a corporate box, and you could imagine how excited they were when they heard about the AFL Grand Final trip that was on offer,” he said. The Ambassadors have also been rewarded by the Fremantle Football Club, and have been invited to attend the round 11 match against Richmond at Subiaco Oval on 10 June.
