Exciting midfielder Brett Peake has given Fremantle a tremendous boost on the eve of the NAB Cup by agreeing to terms to remain with the club until the end of the 2009 season. The son of WA football legend Brian Peake, Brett was the first father-son player taken by the club when he was selected in the 2003 National Draft. He made his debut in round 13, 2005, against the Kangaroos, and played nine of the remaining 10 games that season. He came of age in 2006, playing 20 games and establishing himself as an important member of the Fremantle midfield. The outstanding progress was rewarded with selection in Australia’s International Rules squad for the two-match series in Ireland.“I’m really happy to be playing my football at Fremantle and being part of what is going to be an exciting phase in the club’s history,” Peake said.“The opportunity that Fremantle has given me, and the faith that the coaching staff has shown in me has been fantastic, and I look forward to repaying that faith and giving back to the club in the future.”Peake spent three years out of football and started playing again at the age of 18 for Willetton in WA’s Amateur competition. A year later he would line up for East Fremantle in the WAFL, and soon after that was on his way to Fremantle.“For someone to reach the standard that he has, coming from the background he did in terms of going away from the game for a while, is an outstanding effort,” said Fremantle Senior Coach Chris Connolly.“I think he surprised a few people by how quickly he’s come along, but certainly not the coaching staff here, because his willingness to learn, to improve his game, and his fierce competitiveness have been the qualities that have driven him forward.“We see him as an integral part of the club into the future, and it’s great news that he’s signed up for the next three seasons.”
