Fremantle’s own Hayden Ballantyne has won the 2011 AFL Goal of the Year for his brilliant running goal in the round 2 Starlight Purple Haze game at Patersons Stadium against Geelong.

'Ballaz' took possession of the ball on the edge of the defensive side of the centre square and took off for one of his trademark runs.

He scythed his way through the centre of the ground, taking a bounce before kicking to Matthew Pavlich at centre-half forward.

Geelong’s Harry Taylor punched the ball straight back to where it came from, but Ballantyne, running at full pace, scooped it up and dodged around four Cats’ defenders.

He then handballed it to Pavlich, who ran into a brick wall. Freo’s captain looked sideways and handed the ball off to Ballantyne, who had not stopped running.

'Ballaz' steadied and blasted through an inspirational goal from about 45m out that had the Patersons crowd in raptures.
