Five Talking Points from the qualifying final
InSPURRrational, Sandi shines, Hilly's icing, a first home prelim & tribunal concerns
How good was this guy? A 26-year-old who was plying his trade in South Australia two years ago waltzed into the most intimidating stadium in the AFL and played with the poise of a season star. Spurr was incredible, especially considering the team was missing Michael Johnson, Garrick Ibbotson and Clancee Pearce in defence, and Nick Suban was subbed out hurt. Not only did he repel attack after attack with his 29 disposals and 10 marks, he kicked a massive goal, this after only booting one in two seasons. He embodies the 'play-your-role’ mantra of Ross Lyon’s coaching. Great game ‘Spurry’.
The big man reminds us he can play
At times this season, people have questioned Aaron Sandilands’ worth to Fremantle. Watch the qualifying final for your answer. The champion ruckman’s influence on the contest was profound. He was a driver of Freo’s clearance domination and his ruck work at forward stoppages created a number of goals for the team. Partnered with Zac Clarke, Sandilands is arguably the biggest x-factor in Freo’s finals assault.
Hilly’s stamp
If there’s been better icing on a cake, let us know, because Stephen Hill’s brilliant five-bounce goal to put an exclamation point on the win was simply stunning. The Cats didn’t even see ‘Hilly’ coming, he snuck onto the ground from the interchange bench, grabbed the footy and tore the hearts out of every Geelong player and supporter.
First home prelim
Fremantle’s win gives it a week off and a match against Sydney, Richmond or Carlton at Patersons Stadium in two weeks. Win that game and the Fremantle Dockers will be playing in the 2013 AFL Grand Final.
Tribunal concerns
While Freo don’t play next week, there will be plenty of interest in the Match Review Panel’s findings after Zac Dawson was reported for striking James Podsiadly before a ball had been bounced. Chris Mayne could also come under scrutiny for a hit on Steve Johnson. Hopefully, the boys are available for the preliminary final.
