Star midfielder Nat Fyfe says Fremantle will win or lose as a team, and that no one player can be blamed for a loss.

Freo had a heartbreaking four-point loss to Essendon on Friday night at Patersons Stadium.

Chris Mayne missed a golden late opportunity right in front of goal when his left-footed shot to win the game hit the post.

Fyfe said Mayne could not be blamed for the defeat because Freo had ample opportunities to wrap the game up before that incident.

“It wasn’t his fault, it was an opportunity that was missed by the whole team,” he said.

“It doesn’t just come down to one person.

“There were a lot of guys that missed opportunities and it wasn’t just one person that had the opportunity to win the game for us.

“It shouldn’t have been that close in the first place.”

Fremantle had led the game by 37 points in the second term before the Bombers fought back with a stirring third-quarter comeback.

Fyfe, who was Freo’s best on the night, said Freo would cop the blame together for the costly lapse.

“It’s the second week in a row we’ve had a great start and we’ve opened the gate and let opposition teams back in,” he said.

“In our analysis we’ll look at that and rectify that.”
