The theme at Fremantle ahead of tonight’s blockbuster against Collingwood at Patersons Stadium is ‘team’.

Just as it was against Gold Coast a week ago, it will take great effort on all lines for Freo to knock off the Magpies, who boast a brilliant all round side.

Breaking it down further, we look at each area of the field and what Freo needs to do to take four precious premiership points.

Freo Forward line –
Collingwood’s greatest weakness in 2013 has been its inability to stop leaking points. The Pies concede just over 100 points per game - only Brisbane, Western Bulldogs, Melbourne and GWS have allowed more. The source of Collingwood’s defensive struggles is turnovers. They have conceded the fourth most points (211) from turnovers in their defensive half. This could play right into the hands of Freo, which leads the AFL for pressure acts applied in attack. Collingwood also struggles to stop teams scoring from clearance situations in its defensive half, ranking third worst in the league (199 points against).

Midfield – Michael Barlow spoke during the week about the need for Freo’s midfielders to get more involved on the scoreboard. So far in 2013, the perma-midfielders Ryan Crowley (3), Nat Fyfe (3), Stephen Hill (2), Barlow (2) and David Mundy (1)have accounted for a total of 11 goals. Collingwood’s on-ball division has been far more potent in front of goal. Steele Sidebottom (9), Scott Pendlebury (7) and Dane Swan (3) have kicked 19 goals between them.

Freo defence – Fremantle’s back six doesn’t need to stray from the norm. It concedes an average of just 80 points per game and is again entrenched as one of the best in the league. What it will need is some help. All Australian full-back Luke McPharlin, who is likely to play on forward monster Travis Cloke, said earlier this week that his job would be made easier if Freo’s midfield pressures the Collingwood forward 50 entry kicks.

“As a backman, it’s pretty tough to stop decent inside 50s,” McPharlin said.

Ruck – Collingwood runs a distant last in the AFL for total hitouts this season with 166. Freo is in the middle of the pack with 228 and could gain a big advantage if Jon Griffin is able capitalise on this area. However, while the Pies’ ruckmen struggle to get their hands on the football at ruck contests, they have been more efficient at using it when they do. Collingwood has 44 hitouts toadvantage in 2013, one more than Freo on 43.
