The Jon and Jack connection
Find out something very interesting about Jon Griffin and Jack Hannath you probably didn’t know.
They were both at South Australian club Central Districts when Griffin was a member of the Adelaide Crows and Hannath just a teenager.
Griffin played only 30 games in three seasons at the Crows.
That saw him regularly line up for the SANFL side, where a teenage Hannath was just starting out.
“I used to watch Jack play and I played and trained with him, too,” Griffin said.
And as they have been doing on the AFL field this season, the pair worked closely together at Centrals.
“It was a good chance to bounce ideas off each other and for Jack to come and chat to me when he wanted to,” Griffin said.
“It’s great to have him come over here now and it’s good to see how far he’s come and how much he’s improved.”
Griffin and Hannath will take on dual premiership ruckman Darren Jolly when Freo plays Collingwood on Saturday night.
The Magpies have had by far the least hitouts in the AFL this season with just 166, but Griffin wasn’t buying into it.
“Jolly hasn’t played too much footy over the past couple of weeks so Quinten Lynch has had to take most of the ruck,” he said.
“I haven’t read too much into that stat. Jolly is a proven performer and a premiership ruckman, so it will be a huge test.”
Griffin added that all at Freo warmly welcomed Hannath’s presence in the AFL side.
“Jack’s been great. He’s been really competitive and he’s come in and given me a chop-out in the ruck as well,” he said.
“It’s great experience for him and great for the team as well.”
