Sturt’s takeaways from ‘professional’ Fyfe

While much has been made of Fremantle’s early selections in November’s NAB National Draft, emerging midfielder Michael Frederick hopes that the 2019 draft class will be known for more than Freo’s three top-10 picks. 

Taken at no.61, Frederick was pleased to be able to go through his development with a group of elite talents in no.7 pick Hayden Young, no.8 pick Caleb Serong and no.9 pick Liam Henry.

“It’s good having the two Victorian boys (Young and Serong) coming over to WA. It’s the same for me and it’s good to experience that with them,” Frederick said.

“With (Young, Serong and Henry) being high picks, they’re probably a bit more advanced.

“I’m working with them and chilling with them as well, getting to know what they’re like off the field and how to go about it.

“On the field, we’re working with each other and asking questions and all that. We’re all going through the same thing and that’s been good for me.”

Off the Track | Michael Frederick

Fremantle recruit Michael Frederick joins us straight from the track for a chat about how he is tracking this pre-season.

Frederick already feels settled in WA after moving over from Adelaide and is living with fellow South Australian Mitch Crowden. 

He said his mum was thrilled to have her son at Fremantle after her tour of the facility last week at a family induction.

“I’m really settling in and I feel like I’m at home,” Frederick said. 

“Mum was rapt, I went home in the four-day break and she wouldn’t stop talking about (the induction), especially going to see Optus Stadium.

“She said that I’m really lucky to be in the environment that I am in, so she really loved it.”

Frederick’s twin brother Martin is also on an AFL list at Port Adelaide, and the pair are competing to see who can make their debuts first.

He said the ideal would be being able to play against each other when Freo and Port Adelaide go head to head in round 15 at Adelaide Oval.

“We have been talking about it and if we were to debut in the same game, that would be pretty cool,” Frederick said.

“He reckons he’ll get a few AFL trial games in the Marsh Series but other than that we don’t talk too much about footy.”
