“It’s been coming” says Mundy
Champion midfielder David Mundy showed promising signs that his Doig Medal-winning form is nearing
David Mundy says his best-on-ground effort against Melbourne on Saturday was the culmination of weeks of hard work and persistence in what has been a difficult season to date for the Freo midfielder.
Mundy had 27 disposals and six tackles and was hugely influential at the stoppages and around the ground.
The 26-year-old said he’d been working diligently with the midfield coaches and felt his form had been improving by the week.
“It’s good to get a kick after so many months of not, but I always felt it’s been coming,” Mundy said.
“It might not have come out in the results, but I’ve been working hard with our midfield coaches at training and I always felt I was heading in the right direction.”
Despite his high statistics in Saturday’s game, Mundy said it wasn’t possessions that he judged his game on, but rather his impact on the team’s new midfield structures under Ross Lyon.
“For me, it’s not about kicks and handballs and possessions,” he said.
“It’s about the effort and the little things. It’s growing with the new structures.
“We’re working hard off the track and, with the injection of Matt de Boer in the midfield, it gives us a real hard edge.”
Lyon described the 2010 Doig Medallist’s performance as his best game of the year to date following an injury interrupted pre-season.
“His ability to mentally hang in while he’s been rebuilding to his best form has been tough at times, but in the end, if you keep working hard, you’ll get the right result and I thought David got that,” Lyon said.
