Fremantle starts warming to Harley Bennell trade

The Age

A meeting between Fremantle coach Ross Lyon and Harley Bennell has helped ease the Dockers' nerves about taking the midfielder on.

It is understood Lyon and Bennell met face-to-face in Perth on Tuesday, with the Dockers shaping as the Gold Coast player's probable new home despite the club wavering somewhat in recent days.

While interest from Richmond and Essendon has waned, leaving Fremantle as Bennell's preferred new club and only real suitor, a deal could still be some days away.

The Dockers are well aware of the off-field issues that led to the Suns deciding to move Bennell on at the end of the season and are continuing to conduct their own research.

Fremantle doesn't pick again until No. 35, meaning the club may look to secure a pick somewhere in the 20s to offer for the talented 21-year-old.

Giant headache for Freo

The West Australian

Fremantle may have to increase their offer to Greater Western Sydney or consider other options to fill their desperate need for a key forward as the Giants dig in their heels over Cam McCarthy.

The Dockers’ No.1 target is looking an increasingly unlikely proposition, with GWS football manager Graeme Allan declaring McCarthy would “definitely” be a Giant next year.

Yarran stalemate, high price on Hawk, Kanga in demand

AFL.com.au

RICHMOND is searching for a late first-round selection to satisfy Carlton's demands for Chris Yarran, with scenarios involving picks being discussed on Tuesday.

It is understood the Tigers value Yarran between pick No.15 and the early 20s, and they acknowledge he is a player worthy of a first-round pick.

The Tigers have ruled out swapping their pick No.12 directly for Yarran, and their second-round selection (No.31) is too late to satisfy the Blues.

A number of scenarios are being discussed – and it remains possible other players could become involved in the deal – but there is a feeling the trade will still take days to play out.

Cats looking at one ruckman in and one out

GEELONG and Gold Coast remain "quite a way apart" in negotiations over Suns ruckman Zac Smith, but is letting free agent Dawson Simpson explore his options, Cats list manager Stephen Wells says.

Smith, 25, has nominated Geelong as his preferred new destination after falling behind Tom Nicholls as the Suns' first-choice ruckman this season.

History made as Blues send Henderson to Cats for future draft pick

GEELONG has created history by using its 2016 first round pick to secure Lachie Henderson from Carlton.

It is the first time a club has used a future draft pick to make a trade.

The value of the pick will be dependent on where Geelong finishes on the ladder next season.

It is 25-year-old Henderson's third club.
