The top moment of Fremantle’s 2014 season belongs to the greatest player in Fremantle Dockers’ history.
Matthew Pavlich reached a milestone no player had ever achieved in the history of WA’s two AFL clubs – 300 games.
The setting was round 9 at Patersons Stadium against Freo’s great modern rival, Geelong.
With his proud family joining his adoring fans in the stands, Pavlich kicked the evening off according to script when he marked in the pocket and goaled just seconds after the first bounce.
Minutes later he brought up his second major, which was also his 600th career goal.
Freo remained in control throughout to win for its inspirational captain.
As much as Pavlich tried to play it down, the game itself and the week leading up to it was a tribute to his magnificent career.
The Freo faithful is forever grateful for what he has done for the club.
He could have left years ago, but he didn’t because of his values.
After the game, Pavlich was visibly overcome by the entire occasion.
“I’m overwhelmed, the whole week was overwhelming,” Pavlich said. “The club’s support and the fans’, and the industry in general, the amount of messages of support I got, I was seriously overwhelmed throughout the wholeweek and a little bit embarrassed by the attention.”
