For 14-year-old Nic Sinclair of the Applecross Junior Football Club, Thursday’s training session at Shirley Strickland Reserve was like no other.

Sheltered from heavy rain in the club’s change rooms, he and his teammates huddled together to listen to 2015 Brownlow Medallist Nat Fyfe talk of his journey to AFL football.

Nic is currently a boarder at Aquinas College – as Fyfe was – and dreams of playing football at the highest level.

He said it was inspiring to hear from the Fremantle superstar.

“Knowing he came from the same place as where I am now… it probably won’t happen but people like us can dream,” Nic said.

“Everyone wants to be as good as that one day.”

Fyfe was also humbled by the opportunity to share lessons of his past.

After talking to the team about nutrition, routine and his junior career, the 24-year-old watched over several drills as the Applecross Hawks battled through heavy conditions, both overhead and underfoot.

“To come out and have a chat to year nine kids – and a lot of them Aquinas boarders, so a similar pathway to mine – it’s cool,” Fyfe said.

“It’s nice for me to briefly be able to look back on where I’ve come from and then offer some advice and guidance for some of these kids in the same position with it all ahead of them.

“I used to come out of boarding school and play here as well, so it’s great.”
