Newly appointed Fremantle captain David Mundy said he was honoured and thrilled to be named skipper by his teammates on Friday afternoon.
“It’s going to be a fantastic honour to be Fremantle’s next captain,” Mundy said.
The veteran of 233 games will be the eighth captain in Fremantle history and understands what will be expected of him, having already played with the past two captains.
“I had the privilege of playing under Peter Bell and Matthew Pavlich, both great examples of fine captains,” Mundy said.
Mundy to lead Fremantle in 2016
Despite previous skipper Matthew Pavlich’s decision to relinquish the captaincy, Mundy was certain that his leadership would continue to resonate amongst the playing group.
“He’s a fantastic person and champion player,” Mundy said of Pavlich.
“They’re big shoes to fill but having the support of him around the club will be a great resource.”
Mundy praised the openness of the Fremantle Dockers culture, and mentioned the importance of feedback in the process of selecting the leadership group.
“There was some really good feedback given within the group, areas for myself and others to improve on,” Mundy said.
“On the field it’s quite easy because it’s passionate and immediate.
Ten things about Mundy
“When you’re staring a guy in the face and you’re heart only beats 60 beats a minute, it’s a bit harder.”
While admitting that being captain brings new roles and responsibilities, Mundy said he would approach the job with the same mentality and embrace the challenges involved.
“A few more commitments off-field, and maybe a bit more pressure but it’s something I’m really looking forward to,” he said.
“I’ll still train and behave the same way around the club.
“I’m certainly not uncomfortable with being uncomfortable.”
