For the first time since 2007, the Fremantle Dockers will start the AFL season with a new captain.
David Mundy was selected by the playing group on Friday afternoon as the right man for the job, taking over from Matthew Pavlich who captained a club record 189 games for Fremantle from 2007 to 2015.
Pavlich relinquishes captaincy
In an established club process, Fremantle’s players each selected five teammates on a 5,4,3,2,1 basis.
Based on the results of the vote, there were also changes made to the leadership group, with Michael Johnson being added to the group alongside Mundy, Lee Spurr, Aaron Sandilands, Matthew Pavlich and Nathan Fyfe.
Mundy will be the eighth captain in Freo’s 22-year history, and will enter the role after an already decorated career in the AFL.
The 30-year-old is one of the most reliable players in Fremantle history, having played over 20 games in a season, nine times and currently sits at fifth on the Freo all time games list.
Introducing your 2016 leaders
Mundy is regarded as one of the best inside midfielders in the competition, reflected by a career high in disposals and a long-awaited All Australian selection in 2015.
The 2010 Doig Medallist is as synonymous with the Fremantle Dockers as any player in club history, and will captain the club with the same leadership and class that the football world has grown accustomed to seeing on the field every week.
