Fremantle wingman Stephen Hill is making the most of his opportunity to play in an inside role in the midfield.
Known for his speed and outside run throughout his 172 game career, Hill has started to get more time contesting for the ball as injuries hampered Fremantle’s midfield in 2016.
With the return of Nat Fyfe, Freo’s engine room is nearing full strength again, but Hill is still in consideration as an inside player alongside the likes of 2016 Doig Medallist Lachie Neale and the emerging Connor Blakely.
In Fremantle’s two-point win over Collingwood in the JLT Community Series on Saturday at Rushton Park, Hill racked up 29 disposals and continued work advancing the ball with a game leading 437 metres gained.
But when given the chance at stoppages, Hill also worked well - picking up five first possessions with 100 per cent of these leading to a Fremantle clearance.
“It was good to get some game time in, and to also be playing a bit more inside this week,” Hill said.
“I enjoy being around the ball and, hopefully, I can keep building and improving in the midfield.”
One factor that may lead to more time on the inside for Hill is Fremantle’s signing of his younger brother Bradley, whose inclusion has boosted Fremantle’s running stocks.
With 363 metres gain against Collingwood, Bradley was behind only his older brother in advancing the ball, showing creativity and elite decision-making in the process.
Stephen credited the work of his brother and Fremantle’s new signings, with Cam McCarthy and Joel Hamling also impressing against Collingwood.
“They’re building and put up some pretty good performances (against Collingwood),” Hill said.
“Hopefully, they can keep it going and we’ll see them playing some good footy throughout the year.”
