- Brayshaw an 'eye-catcher' after JLT 1
Defender Nathan Wilson is upbeat about Fremantle’s prospects in 2018, providing they can show more of the form on display during a vastly improved second half against Adelaide at Strathalbyn Oval on Sunday.
Wilson said basic errors contributed to Fremantle’s 29-point half time deficit, and eventual 10-point loss, during the club’s opening JLT Community Series clash, but he was pleased the team was able to take the lead late in the game and have a chance of victory.
“It was obviously disappointing to lose but the boys fought back from where we were,” Wilson said.
“It was just some fundamentals, we were a bit fumbly in the first half and then we worked our way into it.
“I found that we took the game on a little bit more (in the second half), which is what we want to do this year.
“Obviously, for a first hit out, we can expect some errors. But we’re going to build from here and, hopefully, anything is possible this year.”
Wilson was pleased with the performances of first year players Andrew Brayshaw and Bailey Banfield, with a number of new draftees set to push for selection throughout the season.
“I think all the boys had a little bit of a crack today which is good,” Wilson said.
“I think Andy went alright as an inside mid with (Nat) Fyfe and Lachie Neale, so it seems to work.
“Bailey’s a mature sort of player. He played WAFL for a while so he stood up, he’s come in and played his role for the team.
“He is a big boy, so he could hopefully, play this year. If not sooner rather than later.”
The push for selection from Fremantle’s youth, combined with an almost fully fit list, is likely to lead to an intense competition for a place in the side’s starting 22.
Fremantle got through the game with just one injury concern, with defender Cam Sutcliffe taken off the field after a head knock.
“It’s the first full hit out, so to get through with almost everyone unscathed was important.
“It makes it tough for the coaches to pick a team, which is what you want. We don’t want any injuries to stop us from where we want to go this year.
“We’ve got a couple of weeks and the we’re on and ready to go.”
