Fremantle’s AFLW team has received a boost on the closing day of the second 2019 AFL Women's Trade and Signing Period, with Jasmin Stewart re-signing with the club.
Stewart was Fremantle’s first choice in the 2018 draft, following an excellent season for Claremont where she won the club’s Best and Fairest award.
Her signature brings the total number of Fremantle players retained to 19, as the AFLW competition shifts into the Free Agency period.
Stewart said the relationship between the coaches and the girls only added to her decision to stay.
“I brought my mum with me the day I walked in to Freo to sign my contract, and she could just feel how happy I was,” Stewart said.
“I think that’s a big sign to show that I had made the right decision.
“Loyalty is a big thing for me as well, so being able to stay at the club and keep the bond with the girls is a big factor towards me staying.”
AFLW Senior Coach Trent Cooper said the signing of Stewart was approved by the AFL today.
“We’re really excited to sign Jas Stewart for another year; she was our first pick last year and unfortunately due to circumstances out of her control she couldn’t play at her best this year,” Cooper said.
“Jas will be a valuable player for us in the midfield and possibly in the forward line as well.
“She’s very good at contested ball in close and she will have one of the most penetrating kicks in the competition when she plays.
“Jas is really keen to have a big WAFLW season at Claremont and launch into next year.”
Stewart said not playing in the Fremantle side this season, only creates a stronger desire to impress in 2020.
“Not getting a game in the AFLW season has made me even more hungry for this WAFLW season,” Stewart said.
“I’ve trained for the last four months or so with Fremantle, and after that long training period I’m hanging out for a game.
“Hopefully, I’ll be able to show what I’ve learnt from the coaches and the girls, and how I’ve developed my game.”
