Fremantle were left to rue their squandered chances in a seven-point loss to Essendon on Sunday at Marvel Stadium, according to midfielder David Mundy.
Freo fell to the Bombers despite having more scoring chances than their opponents, however Mundy said their mistakes hurt beyond their 7.11 (53) scoreline.
The Fremantle leader did his best to give his team a sniff, starring with 34 disposals, 17 contested possessions, nine clearances, six tackles and a goal.
He credited the Bombers for their ability to be more damaging when moving the ball forward while Freo’s indecisiveness made life difficult for players in all areas of the ground.
“I think we really let ourselves down with the subtleties of the game today,” Mundy said.
“Our ball use going forward and kicking it to the advantage of our teammates all across the field really let us down and Essendon, to their credit, were really composed and really clinical, especially towards the end of the game.
“Everyone worked so hard to get the ball up there and into good positions for shots on goal, it’s frustrating when they don’t come off and at the very least, (players further down the ground) need a bit of time to get into position and get a bit of a spell.”
Mundy praised Fremantle’s defenders, saying they were often put into a difficult situation.
Alex Pearce kept opponent Joe Daniher goalless while Luke Ryan (eight rebound 50s) and Nathan Wilson (10 rebound 50s) were impressive off half back.
“The boys down there are doing a fantastic job, they’re working really hard,” Mundy said.
“Sometimes it doesn’t help with some of the easy ball that’s coming their way but they’re scrapping and fighting away and doing a great job.”
Mundy said the playing group is hungry to break a three-game skid this Sunday against Brisbane at Optus Stadium.
“We’re certainly conscious of where we’re at in the season now and how we’re going,” Mundy said.
“We’ve been fairly poor in the past three weeks so it will be really exciting to get in front of the home crowd, back to our home deck and, hopefully, instil our game plan in the way we knew we can in the in the way we aim to every week.”
