Fremantle father-son selection Jaren Carr has revealed the advice given to him by his dad, Matthew, and uncle, Josh, in the lead-up to the Telstra AFL National Draft.
Father Matthew (134) and uncle Josh (83) combined for 217 games at Fremantle between 2001 and 2008, and their message to the newest Fremantle draftee, Jaren, was simple: “it’s just the beginning.”
“Playing for the Club I grew up supporting, and that my dad and uncle both played for, is a privilege in itself, and I couldn’t be more excited,” Carr said.
“(They said) that the draft is good, but it’s only the first step.
“It’s a fresh start, but it’s only the beginning, and the work starts now.”
Carr has been long associated with the Club, not just through his family bloodline but also via the Fremantle Dockers Sport, Business, and Leadership program powered by SEDA that he graduated from in 2022
“In 2022, I did the Diploma of Sport and Business with SEDA and the Freo Dockers, which was great because I got to spend a lot of time around the Club, learn about the different roles people play, and make some lifelong friends from that class as well,” Carr said.
Reflecting on his own game, Carr noted significant development in 2024, which saw him earn his WAFL league debut for South Fremantle, playing nine games.
“I started out in the twos (for South Fremantle) but was able to play some good footy and work my way up into the ones,” Carr said.
“This year, I played a high half-forward role, and I’d like to think that running is my best asset, which my marking complements as well. I like trying to create opportunities inside forward 50.
“I played some consistent footy there as well.”
welcome to the other side of the fence, Jaren Carr 😮💨

Carr went straight to work in joining Fremantle's 1-4 year players for Friday's training session, the morning after being selected.
The Freo father-son selection expressed his eagerness to officially get stuck in on Monday 25 November with the entire playing group, including the other new draftees.
“The boys train really hard. It was good to get a bit of experience under my belt and see what the standard was like at the elite level,” Carr said.
“Guys like Andy Brayshaw and Caleb Serong seem to push the standards down there, and I’ve been doing a bit of work with Nathan O’Driscoll as well. Being able to continue to push with him is definitely something I’m excited for.”
