Just 14 games into his time at Fremantle, Luke Jackson is starting to prove the early doubters wrong.
The 21-year-old was named Mark Robinson’s ‘Monday Hero’ on AFL 360, earning comparisons to Carlton legend Anthony Koutoufides and was highlighted as potentially being the best player in the competition in the future.
The forward / ruckman arrived at Fremantle as a part of a blockbuster trade with Melbourne and signing a contract out until the 2029 season.
He played one of his career-best games against Essendon in round 15, kicking three goals and taking seven marks.
“I’m going to be honest, I didn’t think Luke Jackson had this sort of footy in him,” Robinson said on Fox Footy.
“I thought they were overpaying this young fella. This guy is 21 years of age.
“I called him the ‘blue collar Kouda’ in the paper today, because he’s got the ability to play in multiple positions, he’s athletic like (Koutoufides).
“This guy at 21 is doing something ‘Kouta’ didn’t do at 21.
“At 25, this kid could be the best player in the competition and I never thought I’d say that.”
Talking on First Crack, Leigh Montagna highlighted Jackson had been among the best 20 players in the AFL through the past seven rounds.
First 7 rounds | Last 7 rounds | |
Player rating | 9.8 | 16.3 |
Disposals | 11.7 | 18.8 |
Contested possessions | 6.4 | 10.5 |
Marks | 2 | 5 |
Goals | 1 | 1.2 |
“(Jackson) is proving a few people wrong already,” Montagna said on Fox Footy.
“Look at his last seven weeks, that player rating of 16.3 is in the top 20 players in the competition.
“His marks have more than doubled, he’s taking contested marks and he’s posing a real threat, he’s giving headaches to the competition now.
“He’s really proving what he was always going to be and he’s (at Fremantle) for a long time.
“His numbers the last seven weeks have been enormous. The three goals, 17 disposals, nine score involvements, seven marks.
“He was everywhere on the weekend and is continuing on in terrific form.”
