Fremantle’s leadership is set to be finalised by the end of the week as the Club puts their final touches on what promises to be an exciting 2023 AFL season.
At Wednesday’s Season Launch at Crown, Fremantle CEO Simon Garlick confirmed the players had completed the voting process for the captaincy and leadership group, with the Club likely to announce Nat Fyfe’s successor prior to Friday’s match sim against Adelaide at Victor George Kailis Oval.
“The players submitted their votes yesterday,” Garlick said.
“From here we look to tally those, get input from specific key stakeholders and the coaching group in particular.
“I’d say we’ll have an announcement in the next couple of days. There’s a genuine prospect of having a captain or captains leading the team and more importantly, the leadership group, by Friday.”

Garlick acknowledged it won’t be easy for Fremantle to improve on their 15.5 win season in 2022, but he remained confident in the development of the playing group.
“There’s a really exciting year ahead for us as a Club,” Garlick said.
“I think there’s great foundations in place for us but what we’re also mindful of is we have the third youngest list in the competition, that our absolute focus is ensuring we contend on an extended and sustained basis.
“We’re not putting any limit on what we can achieve in 2023 and we’ll be doing everything we can to be as successful as we can this year.”
Garlick said he could feel the excitement building within the Purple Army ahead of round one against St Kilda on 19 March at Marvel Stadium.
“There’s a natural inclination of any supporter of any club, being enthusiastic when they think their team is heading in the right direction, and it’s probably emphasised further for us given we haven’t been able to win that elusive flag,” Garlick said.
“Their passion, creativity and enthusiasm is incredibly strong and we want to encourage that.
“We have the privilege to work on their behalf, and we have to make sure we keep focus our on the right things.”
