Midfield recruit Jaeger O’Meara is having an impact in more ways than one as he settles into Fremantle’s engine room.

The 28-year-old has played 143 games for Gold Coast and Hawthorn, and stood in as captain for the Hawks in 2022 when Ben McEvoy was injured.

Michael Frederick said that leadership was clearly on display during Saturday’s Intraclub game.

O’Meara was a level head when Purple mounted a comeback from four goals down at half time to equal the scores.

Grey would steady and eventually win by four goals.

“Jaeger in the middle was being an experienced head in there,” Frederick said.

“He calmed the boys down when the Purples were getting back up. Making sure we were using our voices and communicating at stoppages.

“He really took us a long way in the game today.”

Frederick said this leadership has also benefited the players off the field, especially in team meetings.

“His leadership is what’s stood out to me in the pre-season,” Frederick said.

“He’s always chirping, he’s constructive and directional with his voice in our team meetings and things like that.

“His leadership’s been awesome in there for us. It was good to have him on the Grey team.”

O’Meara also used his physicality in a midfield that featured Caleb Serong up against the likes of Andrew Brayshaw and Will Brodie.

“It was good having those two guys (O’Meara and Serong) in the middle,” Frederick said.

“’Sebba’ has played more than 50 games now and he was also really driving us forward.”
