How proud are you of the team bouncing back from last week and overcoming the injuries you've suffered so much?
We are incredibly proud. In round two we were really bad and since then I feel we were improving along the way and our games against Melbourne and Adelaide were our best two performances. Then last week was definitely a step back, so to rebound the girls rocked up to training during the week with a really positive attitude. To get the win gives them some validation of the work they have been doing.
One of the players coming back from injury was Ebony Antonio what did it mean to the group to get her back and to get the win for her?
She just gives the group so much confidence, she is not a high possession player, but she is a high impact player. Whenever Ebony is on the field you have a chance of winning the game. She can just do things that not many in the comp can do. So, that gives the group confidence, she is a big personality around the group as well. When we showed her highlights video at training on Thursday night it was like 'wow' we have forgot what we have missed and early on today in the game you could see some of those abilities come through.
She had to ease her way into the game a bit but really showed her class in the second half?
The goal early really got the group up and about. She has lacked a bit of confidence in the knee and has had very few injuries in her career. So, for her to come through it was just getting confidence in her body. Once she gets out there she is such a competitor and forgets about it the way she went.
How important was it for Ebony to get back and play one or two games this season before another pre-season?
I think that was the real benefit. It is not going to change our season but for her to have that ticked off she has worked really hard through that rehab process so now she can have that break because mentally it's pretty difficult in that rehab group. Sometimes they say that rehab is a lonely place but it hasn't been for our group this year. We've had a few together but that group have been fantastic all year and really inspired the rest and Ebony has been a big driver in that.
The win was a good bounce back for the team but you have a chance to have two wins in a row. How important will it be to finish the season on a positive note?
We think we have been improving in the back half of the year but just to get that validation for the group that we are on the right track and wins do that. Sometimes they're not as important as what they should be, but it is why we play sport to get that feeling. So to do that, the group didn't play well at all in the last eight minutes - but the group don't really care about that because they have that winning feeling.
It wasn't a clearance game for you guys but it was a big turnover game, how did you go about creating enough pressure and winning the ball back across the field?
I am really fortunate with the group we have got, it is very natural, led by Kiara Bowers she had 20 tackles again today. The group really bought in defensively that has never been questioned, but we need to work on our ball movement and our offensive part of the game. Even last week there was never an issue with the effort side of things and we are always going to be right in the game because of that.
It was good to get the offensive side of the game moving today and it is a nice score to kick this late in the season?
Particularly, in the third quarter I thought our ball movement into the breeze was really, really good. Last quarter we started off alright but probably got bogged down a little bit and we probably didn't score as well with the breeze with what we would have liked but into the breeze I thought we did quite well. We were happy with aspects of the ball movement but there is still things to work on because we want to be challenging the better teams. We know what we have to do and it is a bit more of that.
You can feel how strong that wind is, what was the message in the third quarter knowing you were going to kick into the wind and I think you won that quarter.
We did, we had a contingency to put a player behind the ball in the first or third if Sydney scored two goals. That never happened, which was good. But we wanted to use the width of the ground and we identified that we could get some advantage through our wings particularly with Ebony back and I think Airlie Runnalls and Phil Seth held their width really well, which gave us that opportunity to work the ball into the breeze.
Did you notice the facilities at Henson Oval?
I love this place, this is my first time here and I have watched it on TV and it's great. Obviously, what is behind us isn't at the right standard yet and it is going to be but that is part of the growth of the industry, we were really comfortable with what we had and we knew before we got here what it was going to be like and that is fine. In a few years time we will look back and say this is a magical place to play footy, I think.
We know with funding in a few years we can aspire to be a lot better can't we?
That is what the players deserve as well, so we want to keep pushing forward at the moment it is what it is. I just want to say Sydney were fantastic today and the last two weeks, just watching them from afar. Scott Gowans and I know each other and he texted me but just to watch them play and the way they are going about things is exciting for the competition and some of the young talent coming through like they have got.
