Will Brodie is living up to his billing as a top-10 draftee after another exceptional effort through the midfield in Fremantle’s 25-point win against Carlton on Saturday night at Optus Stadium.

The last time Fremantle played Carlton without Nat Fyfe in the line-up, Freo’s undermanned midfield were bullied in a 45-point mauling in round three at Marvel Stadium.

But the presence of Brodie was just one reason behind Fremantle ending a four-game losing streak in what was the highest-stakes clash between the two teams in recent memory.

The new recruit has 27 disposals, 25 of them effective, 11 contested possessions, five clearances and a goal.

Outside midfielder Blake Acres said Brodie was the clear standout for Fremantle against the Blues.

“It would have to be Will Brodie, he’s really just come in and exploded on to the scene,” Acres told the Final Siren Podcast with Duck and Oz.

“He’s really stepped up for us. We’ve had weeks where we’ve missed ‘Fyfey’ and a few of our more senior midfielders and he’s really stepped up the whole year and been that real bull for us.

“The whole midfield group has a real commitment to the contest and the stuff they’re doing as a group is outstanding and I’m glad to be a part of it and help out where I can. The boys have been real good.”

A Fremantle fan after growing up in Shepparton, the same regional Victorian city as Michael Barlow, Brodie said he relished kicking his first goal for the Club in front of the Purple Army.

“It was great, I really enjoyed (the goal) the Purple Army got around me, so it was heaps of fun, I loved it,” Brodie said.

“I think Carlton are in really good form at the moment, we knew that were going to bring a great contest.

“The boys stuck to it, we were there for the fight, we brought our contested ball, all four quarters and we’re really proud of the group. I think we did the Purple Army proud tonight and hopefully we keep it going all year.”
