Fremantle have been awarded their first prime-time weeknight game in five years as they take on Geelong at Optus Stadium in round 18 on Thursday 15 July at 6.10pm.
Freo have played two Thursday night games in their history in 2014 and 2015. It is the first Thursday or Friday night game for the Club since 2016 and their first at Optus Stadium.
It is set to be a crucial clash that could shape the finals, with Freo currently in 10th spot on the ladder, just two points out of the top eight, and Geelong in fifth spot with only percentage keeping them out of the top four.
The game will also be played as the Starlight Purple Haze Game, proudly presented by South32.
A special occasion for fans, players and staff at Fremantle, the Starlight Purple Haze Game was originally scheduled to be played against Carlton in round 16 before the game was moved to the MCG.
The 19th edition of the game will have increased significance following the tragic passing of Milli Lucas, a Starlight Star who earlier this year lost her battle with cancer.
Simon Garlick said the Thursday night fixture was a boost for the club.
“After losing the chance to have fans at two Saturday night home games this season, most recently in round 16 against Carlton, we welcome the chance to host our first Thursday Night game at Optus Stadium,” Garlick said.
“It’s been a five year wait for our fans to see their team play in a weeknight prime time slot and we look forward to seeing the Purple come out in their droves.
“After three weeks on the road, this game will be the start of a run of four games at Optus Stadium in five weeks and is a great chance for our members and supporters to get behind us for the run home, while also supporting an incredibly important cause with the Starlight Purple Haze Game.”
South32 have kicked off the fundraising drive for 2021, pledging $1000 for every Fremantle goal in the game while also matching all fan pledges made by midnight 15 July 2021 dollar for dollar, up to a combined total of $50,000.
