Fremantle are thrilled to announce that Trent Cooper has agreed to a two-year extension that will see him continue as senior coach for Season 6 and Season 7 of the AFLW.
Cooper first started at Fremantle ahead of the 2019 season, leading Fremantle to three consecutive finals appearances.
This included Fremantle’s 2020 season, where they went unbeaten up until the preliminary finals stage when the season was called off due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Cooper said he couldn’t wait to see what the Club could achieve in the next two years.
“I’m very excited to say that I’ve signed on for two more years as coach of the AFLW team. Obviously, I’ve enjoyed my time immensely over the past three seasons and I’m looking forward to the next two,” Cooper said.
“Coaching this group has been great. The effort that they’ve put in, the sacrifices they make so willingly to get the best out of themselves as individuals and as a team.
“We’re obviously still chasing greater success, but we’ve had a lot of success over the three years without getting to the pointy end.
“We’re looking froward to challenging again in the next two years to see what we can achieve.”
Under Cooper, Fremantle have adopted an attacking and physical style of play, making them one of the more entertaining teams to watch.
As one of the younger lists in the AFLW, Cooper expects to see Fremantle continue to compete strongly as their younger talent develops.
“Our game style has progressed so much because the girls’ skills are getting better. As a group they’re getting better, they’re stronger,” Cooper said.
“The leaders are getting better and the young ones coming through have so much improvement in them, which is exciting.
“For me as a coach, I’m just learning all the time, you have to be continually learning. Last season was really good for us because things didn’t completely go our way so we get a lot of immediate feedback and we take some good lessons out of that.
“We’re looking forward to implementing those lessons into the 2022 season.”
President Dale Alcock made the announcement during a speech at Sunday’s AFLW Fairest and Best presentation at Crown Perth.
“It’s with great excitement that tonight we announce that Trent has signed on for a further two seasons,” Alcock said.
“We love the success he’s brought us on the field and also the way he’s been able to bring the best out of our AFLW players - who make us incredibly proud with everything they do both on and off the field.
“Congratulations Trent, I’m sure you’re very busy and excited preparing for the start of the AFLW season!”
