Andrew Brayshaw is unlikely to play against Sydney at Optus Stadium on Saturday night due to a calf injury, according to senior coach Justin Longmuir.
Both Brayshaw and Adam Cerra sat out of main training on Wednesday and Longmuir confirmed that Brayshaw was in doubt, while a ‘sore’ Cerra would still play.
Longmuir explained that some Freo players had been impacted by training and playing on various surfaces in the past fortnight as Fremantle re-located to the Gold Coast and Melbourne for their away games against Brisbane at the Gabba and Essendon at Marvel Stadium.
“Cez has pulled up a little bit sore (after the Essendon game)...it was his first game back (from an ankle injury) so we’re just looking after him. He’ll be right to play,” Longmuir said.
“Andy looks like he’s given his calf a little bit of a tweak so he’ll be touch and go, which is disappointing.
“Maybe (it was) the Marvel Stadium surface, the hard surface, maybe the travel and training on different surfaces over the past 10 days has made a few of our boys a little bit sore. It’s something we’ll have to look into.
“He had a scan last night so we’re still working through that, but at this stage it’s not looking great for him.”
Longmuir said he had no problems with any of the surfaces the players had trained or played on.
“It’s just the inconsistencies of the surfaces, and that’s an issue when you move your footy department to another part of the country,” Longmuir said.
“It’s not an excuse for our performances (but) it’s just going to cost Andy a game at this stage.”
Longmuir said he expected Brayshaw to only miss a week of football, and as such, was reluctant to bring Darcy Tucker in the midfield.
The midfielder has been playing as a high defender since making his return in round seven, and Longmuir said it wasn’t worth making Tucker change his role for only one game.
He added that forward/midfielder Michael Walters may be considered for more midfield minutes.
“No (Tucker won’t change roles.) We’re a bit short on personnel down back, especially those high back roles,” Longmuir said.
“We want to get some continuity, so moving Darcy back to the midfield, then Andy comes back next week, (Tucker is) back to the backline.
“It doesn’t help our continuity.”
Longmuir said Fremantle would be boosted down back with the return of All Australian defender Luke Ryan.
"Luke will come into the side, he got through training really well yesterday," Longmuir said.
"We'll welcome him back which should shore up our backline even more and we're looking forward to getting one of our leaders back into the team."
