While many are looking forward to seeing the debut of Josh Treacy this Sunday against Hawthorn at Optus Stadium, midfielder/forward Michael Walters is excited for a particular reason.

Playing predominantly as a small forward this season, Walters is looking ahead to the prospect of crumbing to the feet of the debutant.

However, Walters joked that he will be doing his best to stay out of Treacy’s way when he’s leading.

“I’ll definitely stay out of his way!” Walters said.

“He is strong on his lead and a good target to crumb off, so he is going to give himself every opportunity to get to every contest.

“To have someone like that with him, Matt Taberner and also Rory Lobb when he gets back, you know where the ball is going, and you know how to crumb off them.”

Walters said Treacy was deserving of his opportunity, after putting in a mountain of work throughout the pre-season phase to improve upon his game.

“I’m pumped for him, he is one of those players that ever since he got to the club has done nothing but try to improve,” Walters said.

“He moves well, is durable and a contested beast as well.

“It’s so good to see him reap the rewards…he is a quality player up forward; he is a strong target.

“It’s great to see him get his opportunity this week…and come in and play his role.”

Walters said Fremantle have learnt a lot from Hawthorn’s Easter Monday clash with Geelong, as Freo look to bounce back from a disappointing defeat to Carlton.

“We saw what they did last week, they are a run and gun type team,” Walters said.

“They have a lot of quality young players, especially in their backline, but they have a lot of strong inside midfielders as well.

“We expect them to be a strong contested team…and we want to make sure we get back to our style of footy (this weekend).”
