Fremantle leader Michael Walters felt the playing group left too much to too few in a 45-point loss to Carlton at Marvel Stadium on Sunday.
The Blues were hardly challenged outside of a spirited start from Freo - kicking seven straight goals from half way through the first term to late in the second to put the game to bed by half time.
Walters highlighted a number of areas of improvement, including Freo’s inconsistent start to the season.
Freo’s promising 31-point win in round two against GWS has been bookmarked by two resounding losses on the road against Melbourne and Carlton.
“We as a group don’t want to be known as a team that comes across and is beaten like that,” Walters said.
“We need to make sure we match it with (our opponents) and be more consistent.
“I haven’t looked at the (stats) sheet but there’s no doubt they beat us in all facets of the game.
“Around the contest, their composure and also their strength was far greater than ours and we just couldn’t match it. Early, we felt like we hung in there but our consistency let us down.”
While David Mundy’s 16 disposals was far off his 35 from round two, he managed a career-high 11 tackles in a game where Freo failed to match the Blues’ pressure.
Walters was full of praise for the 35-year-old but added that Fremantle couldn’t continue to rely on the veteran.
“He’s one of those players every week you know what you’re going to get,” Walters said.
“He’s the ultimate professional through the week and it definitely shows on game day, but we can’t be relying on Fyfey (injured captain Nat Fyfe) and him. We need to all get behind them and help out where we can.”
Second-gamer Heath Chapman also had an impact with six tackles and 18 disposals.
“(Heath is) going to be a good player for many years,” Walters said.
“You can see it, he’s hard, he’s tough, he’s got some skill and it’s good that he gets some reward for effort because he’s a quality young player.”
