Fremantle midfielder Caleb Serong has added another award to his growing list of achievements in 2020, winning the Curtin University Sportsman of the Year at the Curtin University Sport Awards on Tuesday at Curtin St Georges Terrace.
Serong, who is completing a Bachelor of Commerce at Curtin, was acknowledged alongside West Coast Fever player Alice Teague-Neeld as the Sportswoman of the Year.
The 19-year-old’s debut season was widely regarded as the best in the AFL, winning the NAB AFL Rising Star, the AFL Players’ Association Best First Year Player Award and Fremantle’s Beacon Award.
He averaged 17 disposals, four tackles and eight contested possessions from his 14 appearances while playing negating roles on the likes of Patrick Dangerfield, Patrick Cripps, Taylor Adams and Luke Parker.
Curtin University Vice-Chancellor Professor John Cordery congratulated Serong along with the other award recipients.
“The Curtin Sport Awards are a fantastic way to recognise elite athletes who have been inspirational in their professional sporting careers and who have also chosen to pursue their studies at the University,” Professor Cordery said.
“Caleb Serong’s first year in the AFL has been outstanding. Debuting in round four of the 2020 AFL season with the Fremantle Football Club, Caleb was awarded the NAB Rising Star award after playing 14 games with the Fremantle Dockers.”
Another gong for Serong!
