Fremantle head into the 2021 season with a midfield full of potential and Adam Cerra believes versatility will be the key to bring the most out of the group.
While seasoned veteran David Mundy’s contract status remains up in the air as Fremantle waits for clarity from the AFL on list sizes, it also boasts two-time Brownlow Medallist Nat Fyfe and a trio of the game’s most exciting young players in Adam Cerra, Andrew Brayshaw and Caleb Serong.
No.32 pick from the 2018 NAB AFL National Draft Luke Valente is also waiting in the wings to make his debut.
Additionally, 23-year-old Darcy Tucker is set to make his return in 2021 after an impressive start to the season before he was unfortunately struck down with a hamstring injury.
Cerra said the key to making the most of Freo’s midfield talent was to ensure players could play multiple roles.
It’s something Fremantle has seen with Cerra playing wing this year and Fyfe providing a strong marking target up forward.
“These days, there’s less and less one position players,” Cerra said
“You see a lot of strong teams like Collingwood, they have a lot of inside mids and they rotate through the wing and half forward.
“It ensures that there’s fresher players on the inside at all times, as you’re getting more rest and more breaks.
“I know late in the year Andrew Brayshaw was learning a bit on the wing as well. I think it’s going to be really good for us.
“Within that group, there’s a lot of different characters and different players. Someone’s strength might be someone’s weakness and vice versa. There’s a good mix of inside and outside players and I can see us really working well together for a long time.”
Cerra said his time on the wing in 2020 allowed him to build and showcase his elite kicking skills.
“I’ve grown my confidence in my kicking. The coaches really want me to take the game and not worry if I stuff up a kick,” Cerra said.
“This year I was really focusing on testing my boundaries and trying to go for the hardest kicks. I think that’s really helped me.
“I worked closely with James Aish and Blake Acres this year, they had a bit more experience on the wing than me.
“I think it’s really helped me and to able to add that flexibility to go inside.”
