Such was Fremantle’s list turnover since their last finals push in 2015, there now are only five players on the current list that have taken part in a finals game.
According to young midfielder Adam Cerra, it means there is a hunger building within Freo’s younger ranks to improve and ensure they start getting finals experience as quickly as possible.
“We’re all very hungry,” Cerra said.
“Caleb Serong said in a recent interview that we took a good step forward this year but we’re not satisfied.
“We want to play finals and bring Freo back to September. We want to get there as soon as possible.”
Cerra said he’s seen glimpses of what Freo could become in 2020.
“We had a really good win against Collingwood as a team, that was one of the first times that we really brought our brand and our game plan to life and we saw what was possible for us,” Cerra said.
“Against Melbourne in the wet, it was pretty tough conditions and we’d been travelling, Gold Coast to Cairns and having a really short turnaround. To get a really good win up there was one to remember.”
To go from 12th in 2020 to finals would require improvement across the board and Cerra has given himself a simple but ambitious goal for the pre-season.
The 20-year-old recently finished third in Freo’s Doig Medal and believes he still has room to grow.
“Last summer I had a pretty strong pre-season to get my body right for a midfield role. This pre-season will be much the same,” Cerra said.
“I want to keep building my body and my fitness and I think I’ll even be stronger and fitter next year.
“Hopefully, that will help me take my midfield ability to the next level.”
Cerra said having the likes Serong, the 2020 NAB AFL Rising Star winner, added to Freo’s growing potential.
“Serong made it look easy, he’s still a kid pretty much at 19 years old and he’s only done one pre-season,” Cerra said.
“Especially in a midfield role, he was going up against men. I think from memory, he shut down Patrick Dangerfield and players of the same calibre.
“For him to be able to do that, it’s amazing with the amount of training he’s done compared to the other midfielders that he’s gone up against. He’s really been able to stand tall and be a really strong player for us.”
