NAB AFL Rising Star Caleb Serong finally has the prestigious Ron Evans Medal around his neck after a presentation during the Doig Medal on Thursday night.
Freo Dockers legend and 2000 Rising Star winner Paul Hasleby was on hand to present Serong with the medal after the 19-year-old was unable to attend the AFL Awards ceremony last month on the Gold Coast.
Serong also received the Beacon Award as Fremantle’s best young talent in 2020 on the evening.
He polled the most votes out of eligible players, finishing ninth in the Doig Medal with 103 votes despite only making his debut in round four.
Serong said he’s settled in well in WA and was enjoying his time at the club.
“I’ve loved this season, coming to the club I wasn’t sure what to expect but everyone from the top down has embraced me and really welcomed me so amazingly,” Serong said.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect having not being to Perth before. I came over on the flight in November and I’ve absolutely loved it. I love the place, the football club, all the staff have been great and I can’t thank them enough.”
Serong said there was a hunger in the whole group to improve for 2021.
“It’s exciting, what we’re building. I’ve learnt a lot from all of the players this year, I really appreciate what you’ve done for me and I can’t wait for what we’re going to achieve in the next few years, I’m really looking forward to it,” Serong said.
“There were plenty of guys debuting this year. We saw with Sam Sturt, Hayden Young, Michael Frederick, Liam Henry and Tobe Watson as well.
“Luke Valente hasn’t played yet and he’s really exciting. The guys I’m learning off, Andy Brayshaw and Adam Cerra, they’ve really helped me.
“Everyone is excited about what’s to come with the Freo Dockers and we’re keen to keep improving and see what we can do next year.
“We’re working really hard on the track already. I’m really keen to take my game to another level next year.”
