Ballantyne unsure if he kicked it
Hayden Ballantyne speaks about his contentious goal and the value of Freo’s ‘fantastic fans’.
Ballantyne appeared set to soccer an easy goal through after teammate Michael Walters had punched the ball on to the goalsquare, but he lost his footing and stumbled.
As he went to ground, the pocket-rocket stuck out his left boot in an attempt to contact the football. Replays were inconclusive, and Ballantyne was also not sure if he had touched it.
“I just chucked my foot out, I was falling over… I looked like a newborn giraffe,” he said.
“I’m not sure if I got my foot to it or not, but the umpire called it a goal, so I’ll take it.”
The round 22 win over Port was the club’s member recognition game, with the team and many supporters in attendance wearing white on the night.
Ballantyne, who kicked four goals against Port, said playing in front of a sea of white was fantastic for the players.
“Seeing the Mexican wave going and the fans making a lot of noise was unreal,” he said.
“We couldn’t even hear our teammates out there, the noise was that great.
“Fantastic fans.”
