Injury relief for Mayne
Chris Mayne looks to have escaped long injury layoff
Scans on Monday cleared Mayne of serious injury, but the 24-year-old will still be carefully managed for the next few weeks after his right ankle was caught under the leg of Geelong opponent Joel Hamling in Saturday's NAB Cup match.
Runner-up in the 2012 club champion award, Mayne shapes as a vital member of the Fremantle forward line after he refined his set shot routine and kicked a career-high 39 goals last season.
Recently reinstated in the club's leadership group, he remained at Fremantle on Monday as a group of players travelled to Badgingarra and Jurien Bay in WA's mid-west as part of the club's community camp.
Two days after the club's opening NAB Cup matches, defender Lee Spurr said there was confidence among the Fremantle players as they seek to improve on last year's seventh place finish.
"There is a lot of belief amongst the group that we can perform on the big stage," Spurr said.
"Training has been going well and we're all preparing for round one.
"There's competition for spots through the whole team [so] we're all trying to cement our spot and play our role week-in, week-out."
Defender Garrick Ibbotson, who also took part in school visits and an Auskick clinic on Monday, said Fremantle had been pleased with its performance in the opening NAB Cup matches.
The club will now travel to Adelaide for a practice match against the Crows with key defender Luke McPharlin and ruckman Aaron Sandilands (glute tightness) expected to join Mayne on the sidelines.
"We definitely want to go over there and play some good footy; we're definitely trying," Ibbotson said of the match, which will be followed by a NAB Cup clash against Carlton one week later.
"We want to try and practice a few things while we're over there, get some game time into some guys who haven't had probably as much and probably haven't had the full pre-season."
