Max Duffy

The small forward faces a tough battle to win into Freo’s best 22 for round 1, but a strong performance in the trial match will go a long way towards earning Duffy an AFL debut. He played very well in the intra-club game, kicking two early goals and finding the ball, however Duffy was left out of the team that defeated the Western Bulldogs last week. The 20-year-old is fast, skilful and has good goal-sense.

Matt Taberner

The long-term hamstring injury to Scott Gumbleton has opened the door for youngster Matt Taberner to grasp a spot as the second tall in Freo’s forward line. Promoted onto the senior list after a solid debut season on the rookie list, the Victorian recruit will look to utilise his excellent endurance and smart running patterns to show he’s worthy of a place in the club’s round 1 team.

Tendai Mzungu

Mzungu has been playing a number of different roles in the pre-season, including as a half-back and on the wing. He has usually played run-with roles on the opposition’s outside players, but the rotation cap should see Freo look to keep the incredibly fit Mzungu on the field in a variety of roles. With the trial match likely to be a dress rehearsal for round 1, it will be a strong indication of how he will be used this season.

The ‘Spider-Barra’ connection

Freo’s star midfield combo has been lethal so far in the pre-season. Sandilands has looked super fit in the ruck, while Mundy has been on fire at the drop of the ball. Look for ‘Sandi’, Mundy and the rest of Freo’s on-ball brigade to continue sharpening their craft ahead of a clash against Collingwood’s star-studded midfield in round 1.

The pressure

Freo’s renowned, suffocating team defence made an appearance in the second half of the game against the Western Bulldogs. Expect it to be there from the first bounce against the Eagles.
