Country boys lap up Community Camp
Three Fremantle Dockers who grew up in country Victoria paid a visit to a small south-west West Australian town
Michael Barlow, from Shepparton, Tom Sheridan, from Riddells Creek and Matt Taberner, from Bright, were part of the Freo squad visited more than 30 schools in towns including Pinjarra, Harvey, Waroona and Baldivis.
The trio were warmly welcomed at Wilson Park Primary School, which has 129 students.
Barlow was an instant hit with the children, using his wit to bring a smile their faces.
The three Freo players stressed the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and enjoying their sports and hobbies, whatever they may be.
During question time, one young girl proudly stated she was a Hawthorn supporter and asked Barlow how disappointing the Grand Final loss was.
The youngsters were quite switched on during a trivia session the players gave them, however, Barlow told them Freo senior coach Ross Lyon wouldn’t be too impressed to find out none of them knew the name of the club’s coach.
Afterwards, Barlow said every player in the Freo squad enjoyed the opportunity to get away from training for a day and spend some time with the children.
“Myself, Tom and Matt all grew up in towns just like Collie, so we remember when the footy players paid us a visit and how happy it made us feel,” he said.
“Hopefully, we’ve been able to bring a smile to the faces of these children today.”
The Freo trio followed their Collie visit with an appearance at Australia Post in Pinjarra. Locals got the chance to meet the players and get their autographs.
