Ross Lyon has acknowledged the growing rivalry between Fremantle and Geelong, but he agrees with Cats’ counterpart Chris Scott that it’s more about the external build-up than the actual game.

The two clubs have met in finals in consecutive years – with Freo winning an elimination contest at the MCG in 2012 and an epic top-four battle at Simonds Stadium last year.

Scott said in his media conference on Tuesday that the spite in recent games between the teams was good for the external build-up of the contest, but also overrated.

Lyon had similar sentiments at his media conference on Thursday morning.

“What makes a rivalry? I’m not too sure,” he said.

“I feel there’s a rivalry every time you push a team down the race.”

Lyon did admit the fact the clubs had played against each other in finals over consecutive seasons added to the theatre.

He said Geelong’s status as the best side of the past decade was also a factor.
“They’re a benchmark, so people have been coming at them and challenging them,” Lyon said.

“They don’t give up the four points very easily. They haven’t lost too many games.

“To go down there (to Simonds Stadium) and win is significant, and to go to the MCG and win is significant from our end.

“It all means nothing (this week), but it’s fierce, it’s going to be on.”
