Fremantle coach Ross Lyon gave the playing group a warning during their 84-point NAB Challenge loss to West Coast at Arena Joondalup on Tuesday.
Watch what Ross Lyon thought about the game.
Sitting in the dugout, Lyon commented on Fremantle’s lack of competitiveness and run and spread in a FOX Footy interview.
“If you don’t compete in footy you get embarrassed pretty quickly and that’s what’s occurred today,” he said.
“It’s a sober reminder for the group. If you want to back off in those areas you become mediocre pretty quick.
“When you pull on the purple jumper, reputations count for nothing, you’ve got to have a go."
With a later start to the pre-season for Freo than most clubs, Lyon said his team are still in a heavy training load.
“We think we’re in good running shape but clearly the competition phase will test us for a little while yet,” he said.
However, being the first hit-out, the Freo coach wasn’t dwelling too much on the loss.
“We did lose by 90-points to Carlton last year in the NAB Cup, (so) I wouldn’t read too much into it,” he said.
“It’s a sharp reminder. It’s good for us all and for the club, but I’m sure we’ll re-group and you’ll see us play better football than this over the pre-season."
Cam Sutcliffe and 2012 Doig Medallist Ryan Crowley are expected to return for the second NAB Challenge match next Wednesday against the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium.
